The Weekly Dump 5.21.21

And It Was All Yellow

Santa Cruz County moved into the “yellow” tier this past week in terms of COVID cases and responses. This should allow more businesses to open locally. The state mask mandate is scheduled to end on June 15th, and that should be interesting. A number of corporate retailers including Costco, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s have said they will no longer enforce a mandatory mask policy once the state drops the mandated requirement. There have been 16,159 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Santa Cruz County, according to the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency, with 79 currently active cases. 206 people have died, 494 have been hospitalized, 2 people are currently hospitalized and none are in the ICU. 15,875 people have recovered from the disease. A total of 135,898 people have tested negative.

Locally, yellow means green. As in tourist money and dollar signs. Local businesses, as well as city and county governments have a lot of revenue they need to make up. Interesting timing, right before Memorial Day, the traditional start of summer. Let’s hope we don’t see another spike as a result of letting our guard down and getting lazy.

They Go In and Out and In and Out

Earlier this week, SCPD responded to Santa Cruz Motor Sports for a report of a suspect in a burglary captured on a security camera around 2:00AM. They identified a suspect who was on “Post-Release Community Supervision” (this is the absolute bullshit joke response from our county probation department where they are supposed to monitor their felons) for vandalism and he had an outstanding  felony warrant from a different county. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail for his felony warrant and burglary. He was released less than 2 days later.

Then on Tuesday, SCPD arrested a 43 year old male for possession of methamphetamine for sale, being a felon in possession of pepper spray, and probation violations. They recovered more than an ounce of meth along with scales, packaging material, and a machete. Obvious local drug dealer. In jail less than 48 hours. He’s out of jail, back on our streets peddling his meth with the Sheriff’s apparent blessing. Neither guy is in jail two days later. Is anyone actually surprised by this?

Man Drowns at Main Beach Near San Lorenzo River

Sunday night around 6PM, a man died after he and 2 children were pulled out of the surf off of Main Beach near the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. First responders, including lifeguards, rescue swimmers, and members of the Santa Cruz Fire Department and Harbor Patrol all responded and aided in pulling a 6 year old, 12 year old and an adult man from the water about 200 yards past the surf as they struggled against the current. According to reports from the Santa Cruz Fire Department, the adult man was unconscious when he was rescued and life-saving efforts aboard the Harbor Patrol boat and at a nearby hospital were unsuccessful. The children were last known to be at the hospital in good condition.

Gangbangers With Guns in Watsonville

Last Saturday morning around 2AM, Watsonville Police arrested a 30 year old male on the 700 block of Main Street for being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon while in a street gang, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, drug possession while armed, car theft, resisting arrest, and a few other charges. You’d think this might be enough to keep him in jail for longer than a week maybe? Nope. This is Santa Cruz! He’s out of jail already.

Getting His Kicks in San Lorenzo Park

This past Wednesday, officers from SCPD responded to a tip about a wanted felon camping in the Benchlands area of San Lorenzo Park (is anyone actually surprised by this?). They identified the suspect as a 66 year old male, who apparently has many run ins with the local law dating back thirty years! In his possession was a chunk of heroin weighing more than half an ounce, along with methamphetamine. He was out “on his own recognizance” (otherwise known as “PTA”) under probation supervision when he was arrested. He would have been kicked to the curb with a Get Out of Jail Free Card but for that pesky probation violation. He’s still in jail for at least another day or two.

The Hook it Brings You Back

Tuesday morning around 7AM, deputies from the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s department responded to the 2600 block of 41st Avenue where they arrested a 56 year old male and charged him with burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. His bail was set at $25K and last check he’s out of jail.

Felton Burglar Arrested

Saturday afternoon around 4:30PM, CHP officers arrested a 40 year old male off of Highway 9 near Plateau Drive in Felton and charged him with burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, driving on a suspended license, and DUI. Last check he’s still in jail on a no bail hold.

Swatting Flies

Last Saturday morning around 7AM, SCPD responded to the Ramada Inn on Water Street after getting a report from a motel guest that someone they didn’t know was screaming and banging on the windows and door to their room. The caller said the person raging outside the room might have threatened them with a gun, so SCPD took it seriously and responded in kind. After they arrived, matters seemed to calm down and I don’t think anyone was actually arrested. They ran a couple names on the pair of guys causing the disturbance, names that sounded familiar. Turns out they were the “boyfriends” of Bad Mom (yes plural is correct). Drama just seems to follow her around. Like stink on mierda.

Handicapping the Rumors For Ryan’s Seat

Odds based on nothing more than random rumors I’ve heard, innuendo, and gut feelings. New odds this week! I was told by a pretty rock solid source that Cynthia Mathews is out. And I believe it, but she’s still staying as a long shot.

  1. Congrats on the new website look.

I have to say, I was getting used to the somewhat more restrictive restaurant policies (not full lockdown). I often sit at the bar when I eat out. With limited seating, the kind of nuisance who pub crawls would be discouraged, and I could eat in peace with pleasant folks. Now the pub crawlers are returning, along with loud voices and bad language. But then, that’s where the money is.

  2. Hasn’t been a peep about the 5k or so (yes thousand) packaged needles found by a Parks crew at the entrance to Pogonip. Narcan, tourniquets, and all the other implements of self destruction were also dumped at the same site right after the highway camps were cleared. Somebody is sitting on this info. while our open spaces are getting literally trashed. Rangers anyone?

  3. Just the Facts…has a pulse on WTF things are going on
Instead of focusing on the supervisor EXITING…NO Ryan. You were NOT a shoe in…lol
Instead of stroking their egos…boring. FOCUS on the city’s parks and recreation staff…that have to deal with every single shitshow out there.
