Santa Cruz County Jail Switches Mental Health Contractor

In light of a recent Civil Grand Jury report that was critical of the Santa Cruz County jail mental health services program, Santa Cruz County officials voted this month to move its private corrections health services contract to a new provider. The one year contract worth nearly $11M is slated for private mental, medical, dental and pharmaceutical services. This is an increase of about $2M above last year’s budget. NaphCare Inc. will be replacing Wellpath LLC, which has served as Santa Cruz County’s jail medical service provider since 2012. The grand jury report voiced deep concerns with the poor mental health treatment provided to the inmate population.

No Regerts in Watsonville

This past Wednesday, CHP Santa Cruz arrested a 42 year old man near Lee Street and West Beach Road in Watsonville after pulling him over in a stolen gray Dodge pickup. After leading officers on a short chase, the man tried to flee on foot but was captured quickly. Police found a loaded, unregistered firearm on the man as well. He was arrested and charged with felony evading, DUI, assault on a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Oh, and he was also a convicted felon and a registered sex offender too. Is he out of jail yet? Probably.

Woodies on the Wharf This Saturday

This Saturday brings the 28th annual Woodies on the Wharf car show to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Always a popular draw, the wharf will be full of classic old cars and people looking at them. A fun event for the whole family, and lots of stuff on the wharf to eat and drink while you’re out enjoying the beautiful weather and cars. Free. Runs from 10AM until 3:30PM.

Pleasure Point Street Fair This Saturday

If you’re not into old classic cars, this Saturday also brings the annual return of the Pleasure Point Street Fair. Now in its 10th year, it’s all happening on Portola between 41st and 38th avenues. Lots of crafts booths, food vendors, and live music. Free. It’s a cool scene. I usually just park at the Capitola Mall and walk down there. It runs from 11AM until 5PM. More information here

The GOAT Has Left the Building

Willie Mays passed away this past week. He lived to the ripe old age of 93, and since he moved to San Francisco in 1958 when the New York Giants became the San Francisco Giants, Willie Mays has been the King of San Francisco. Joe Montana is beloved. Stephen Curry is beloved. Willie Mays is generationally beloved. He’s arguably the greatest baseball player ever. ESPN has him #2 behind only Babe Ruth. He’s undeniably the greatest San Francisco Giant ever. Rest in peace.

  1. I’m not in the habit of crying when people I don’t know personally pass away, but I’m grieving for Willie Mays. He was a big part of my childhood, and beloved by generations.

His collection of baseball records is remarkable, and unequaled by any player in history. I copied this from the Web:
    ——————————-
Mays’ numbers and ranks among position players (min. 1,000 games), 1958-66

    355 home runs, 1st
    88.5 WAR, 1st
    74.3 Offensive WAR, 1st
    .590 SLG, 1st
    165 OPS+, 2nd
    .312 BA, 3rd
    .388 OBP, 4th
    13.8 Defensive WAR, 5th
    160 stolen bases, 5th
    ——————————–
ESPN can suck it. Mays was ten times the ballplayer Ruth was.

  2. GOAT is Willie! And, thanks for the photo of real goats devouring the dry vegetation.
Now, if we could get them to eat all of the trash and litter everywhere else, bingo!
